Thimphu Tsechu

Trip Description

Rated as one of the most spectacular festivals in Bhutan, this trip is a hot favorite amongst our guests. Celebrated in the capital city of Bhutan every autumn, it truly showcases the best of Bhutanese culture and tradition. It all takes place in the courtyard outside in Tashichhodzong, the administrative head quarters of the country. This event dates its origins to 1670 during the reign of Desi Tenzin Rabgye, a famous temporal ruler of that time. Since then, the Tsechu holds a special place in Bhutan’s history and society. The celebrations witness the people joining the event with families and friends and spending quality time with them of getting together while at the same time being blessed by the many sacred dances that take place. The indigenous folk dance performed by both monks and common men with traditionally designed colourful masks and elaborate silk brocade costumes are accompanied by the beats of the drums and cymbals and therefore rendering a euphoric feeling to its viewers. Devotees dressed in traditional finery flock to seek divine blessing during these holy days. This festival is ideal to be combined with the valleys of Thimphu, Punakha and Wangdue for a trip focusing on the cultural aspects of Bhutan. Visitors intending to visit this festival are advised to get to us at the earliest as hotels and airline tickets are notoriously overbooked during this time.
